Good Facts to Know and Shelter Info
Special Events and Offers

Every shelter has different times it will have sales and events that go along with pet adoption. For example, on Saint Patrick's Day of 2012, the Humane Society of Williamson County gave everyone who came in wearing green their adoption for free. An Austin Pets Alive event that same month gave out goodie bags with purchase and also let the adopter take a picture with Darth Vader (since it was called the Dark Side event) after adoption.

This means that you can find a spectacular deal at a shelter quite often just by keeping up with their updates- whether that be via email, twitter, their blog, or their facebook.

If you would like to get these types of offers shown to you regularly, you can add them, like them, follow them, etc. by finding the shelter you like or live closest to and clicking on the link for your preferred method of communication by clicking here or looking under our Communication tab above.

Can’t Adopt? How Fostering A Pet?

Shelters and organizations such as Austin’s Pets Alive and Austin Human Society offer a fun alternative to adoption. Fostering a pet provides temporary living situations for animals. It allows those interested in helping animals to enjoy the pleasures of taking care of animal without such a large commitment. Shelters rely on foster programs because in certain cases animals rescued cannot be put up for adoption right away due to overcrowding in shelters, age, illness, or their special needs. Foster homes provide shelters with an opportunity to rescue more animals and save lives.
Foster homes are expected to provide a safe home, food, and care for their animals. Depending on the pet and their needs, some foster volunteers may need to monitor behavioral or health issues as well as drive them regularly to the shelter for vaccines or check ups. But one responsibility that is esteemed by both Austin’s Pets Alive and Austin Humane Society is socializing with the pet. Whether it involves walking them or playing with them, it is encouraged to bond with the pet.
Those interested in fostering can expect to keep their pet for about 2 weeks. This process can be shorter or longer depending on the animal’s needs. There is an application process, which can be completed online.
If for whatever reason you cannot adopt a pet, we encourage you to look into fostering. It has all the perks of owning a pet, such as companionship, without the full time commitment.

There are thousands of pets out there looking for homes. Do your part! When the time is right, choose shelters over pet stores and breeders.
